WHAT TO EXPECT

Whether it is a pen, a paintbrush, a sewing machine or a camera, visual artists all have a certain medium that they like to work with… And, too, some like to use them all! We offer top-of-the-line equipment for our artists to use during camp, and masterful guidance campers take with them beyond their time at YPI.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Technical and visual foundations mixed with self-expression. Teachers and campers explore photography as a visual language.

YPI offers instruction for both digital and darkroom (or a combination of both!) photographers. Here’s a sampling of what to expect:

Encouragement to develop an artistic style that is unique to you
Learn to review and critique photography as an artform
Mastery of basic camera functions
Understanding of working with different file formats, resolution, and lenses
Deeper development of problem-solving and analysis skill sets
Hands-on set design where you compose, frame, and design the lighting
Simplified image editing workflow methodologies
Fine art prints of your photographs to add to your professional portfolio
Final, personal project presented at We Jazz to add to your professional portfolio

VIDEOGRAPHY

Imaginative storytelling brought to film. YPI’s videography workshops are a deep dive into the creative process of filmmaking.

While the artistic focus of videography can be wide, YPI creates an environment that reaches all pockets and corners of filmmaking through:

Storyboarding the imagination
Hands-on learning of camera and audio equipment
Build lighting and set designs to enhance and capture the essence of your film
Foundational understanding and practice in effective art direction
Stepping out from behind the camera and filling the roles of actor, producer, and director
Post-production instruction culminating in a fully-realized video piece to add to your professional portfolio

MULTIMEDIA

For the experimental artist who can’t seem to stop putting unlike things together, multimedia artists explore extensive selections of media and subject matter to enhance their 2-D and 3-D art-making.

The YPI multimedia visual artist workshops dive deep into:

The importance of observation and self-exploration in the art-making process
Development of a thematic series of pieces that align with audition and college portfolio requirements
Experimentation with media, including:
- Sequential art development, printmaking, and book design
- Graphite, charcoal, chalk, and oil pastel
- Acrylic and watercolor painting, pen and ink
- Clay (hand-building and throwing), plaster, recycled source material
