Returning Campers
Welcome Back!
We are excited to welcome back our returning campers. Below are some general reminders.
- Long single sheets (fitted + loose)
- Pillowcase(s)
- Pillow(s)
- Blanket(s)
- Towels
- Portable fan (dormitories are not air-conditioned)
- Hangers (closet space is limited; plenty of drawers though!)
- Reading lamp, flashlight, or night light should you want one
- Comfortable clothing is the YPI dress code! Bring shorts, jeans, favorite T-shirts, sneakers or other comfortable shoes, bathing suits, a sweater, a jacket, and rainwear.
- Bring enough clothing for seven days.
- There are laundry facilities in the dormitories. Campers will need to bring quarters/staff can exchange cash once on site. Counselors will assist younger students with laundry, if necessary.
- Toiletries, soap, toothpaste, etc… for seven days
- Fun dancing clothes for Wednesday night’s informal dance
- Photography students will need to bring their own DSLR or SLR if you want to work in the darkroom.
- Writing students will need to bring a thumb drive or be prepared/set up to save their work on the cloud (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc…)
Suffield Academy has a school store with limited hours for students to purchase snacks, souvenirs, magazines, stamps, and other supplies. The local pizza shop & Chinese restaurant deliver, however, students may only order at designated times. Parents may wish to provide students with a limited amount of money for their stay. We will be happy to supervise or hold any money parents wish to provide for their children.
There are no public phones, but you can reach campers by calling the YPI cell number 860-918-3155 to leave a message. Cell phones are permitted but campers are asked not to use them during activity or class.
PLEASE NOTE: The best time to call, if necessary, is early morning, dinner breaks or late evening before curfew.

YPI will provide medical services for young people while they are with us at camp. A trained medical professional will be on call 24 hours a day. To help us provide the best care, please fully complete the required medical forms and make sure they are with us before camp.
Once registered, there are several forms that you’ll need to fill out in order to attend camp. Please bring these completed forms to camp. You can download these forms below:

YPI and the State of Connecticut require all campers to fill out and submit a health form every three years.

If your child will be taking any medication during camp, YPI and the State of Connecticut requires this form to be filled out and brought to camp.

Have a friend that you want to room with at camp? We will do our best to honor your requests. Please fill out this form regardless of roommate preference, so we know what t-shirt size to order.

When not being challenged in their classes, students participate in structured recreation activities conducted by trained counselors every afternoon. Evening activities include culturally stimulating performances by local artists, as well as age-appropriate events that promote communication and social development.
This is a sample of what a day at camp might look like:
7:30 am – Wake up, shower, get ready for the day
7:55 am – Leave the dorm, and head to breakfast
8:00 am – Eat breakfast in the dining hall with campers and staff
8:25 am – Walk to class
8:30 am – First session of class begins
10:00 am – Juice break! Have a snack and take a break from class
10:20 am – Second session of class begins
12:00 pm – Lunch break, sign up for recreation
12:30 pm – Rest, play games in the quad, check out the computer lab, read a book, free time
1:30 pm – Third session of class begins
3:15 pm – Break from class, get ready for recreation
3:30 pm – Rec time! Games, sports, and mini-workshops are offered
4:45 pm – Break from rec, shower, get ready for dinner
5:15 pm – Dinner and free time
6:30 pm – Town Meeting – all campers and counselors meet together once a day to discuss camp business
7:00 pm – Free time
8:00 pm – Evening Activity: Bag & Hunt O’ Fun, Counselor/Teacher Hunt, Dance Party, Open Mic, Memory Quilt
9:00 pm – Free time
10:00 pm – Lights out!
Each Friday after lunch, campers are given time to show off everything they’ve worked on over the past week at an event we call We Jazz.
Neither YPI, Inc, nor the Suffield Academy will assume responsibility for damage to, nor loss of personal property brought to YPI by students. YPI reserves the right to use photographs and student work for advertising purposes. If you do not wish YPI to use photos or student work, please request in writing that your child’s photographs, writing, or artwork may not be used.
