To help you better prepare for YPI; we have compiled some helpful information about travel, classes and what to bring to YPI. Hope this helps.

WHERE: YPI will be held at Suffield Academy, a private preparatory school in Suffield, CT about 30 minutes north of Hartford, CT and 20 minutes south of Springfield MA.

ARRIVAL: You should plan to arrive Sunday, August 4 for Week I or August 11 for Week II campers, in time to complete your registration in the quad in front of the dorms between 4:00 P.M. and 5:00 P.M. Registration will be held in Kotchen Quad in front of the dorms. Dinner will be served at 5:30 P.M sharp.

CLASSES: Classes will be held in Tremaine Visual Art Center, Seaverns Performing Arts Center, Gutag Music Center beginning Monday, August 4 at 8:30 A.M. and end on Saturday, August 17 at 9:00 A.M. We will hold a simple goodbye ceremony on Saturday morning at 9:30 each week.

HOUSING: Arrangements have been made with Suffield Academy to occupy the dormitories Sunday, August 4 through Saturday, August 17. Pick-up time on Saturday is at 10:00 AM.

MEALS: Meals will be served in the dining room beginning with dinner on Sunday, August 4 at 5:30 P.M through Saturday breakfast on August 17.

CALLS: There are no public phones, but you can reach campers by calling the YPI cell number 860-918-3155 to leave a message. Cell phones are permitted but campers are asked not to use them during activity or class. PLEASE NOTE. The best time to call, if necessary, is early morning, dinner breaks or late evening before curfew.

MAIL: Personal mail may be addressed to the camper at Suffield Academy c/o YPI, 185 North Main Street Suffield CT 06078


AUTOMOBILE: The best way to get to YPI is by car. Suffield Academy is located off I-91. The school website shows connecting roads to the school or use Google Maps to best find the way from your home.

PLANES: Planes arrive at Bradley International Airport Hartford/Springfield), which is located in Windsor Locks, CT about 10 minutes from the school.

PICKUP SERVICE: We can arrange transportation direct from the airport at no charge. Please let me know if you need a ride to the school. Send me flight information including day and time of arrival, airline, and flight. Confirm your plans at least five days in advance of your arrival.


Since the dormitories are not air-conditioned, I recommend that you bring a portable fan, a nice big one. Blankets, sheets, pillows, pillowcases, and towels ARE NOT provided. (Long singles work) Please bring at least one set per week (Linens and towels, a favorite pillow and a blanket). I suggest you also pack hangers. Some rooms may not have lots of available closet space but will have plenty of drawers. The rooms have overhead lighting, so you may wish to have a reading lamp, flashlight or night-light.

WHAT TO BRING: Comfortable clothing is the dress for YPI. Bring shorts, jeans, favorite T-shirts, sneakers, comfortable shoes, bathing suits, a sweater, a jacket, and rainwear. Include enough clothing for seven days. There are laundry facilities in the dormitories. Counselors will assist younger students with laundry, if necessary. Bring enough toiletries, soap, toothpaste, etc., to last your stay at YPI. On Wednesday evenings, YPI holds an informal dance. Feel free to bring your fun dancing clothes. If you are in the Photography workshops, you will need a camera, either a DSLR or a SLR if you want to work in the darkroom. Writers, bring a flash or thumb drive or save on the cloud.

SPENDING MONEY: Suffield Academy has a school store with limited hours for students to purchase snacks, souvenirs, magazines, stamps, and other supplies. The local pizza shop & Chinese restaurant deliver, however, students may only order at designated times. Parents may wish to provide students with a limited amount of money for their stay. We will be happy to supervise or hold any money parents wish to provide for their children.

MEDICAL CARE: YPI will provide medical services for the young people while they are with us at camp. A trained medical professional will be on call 24 hours a day. To help us provide the best care, please fully complete the required medical forms and make sure they are with us before camp.

PLEASE NOTE: Neither YPI, Inc nor the Suffield Academy will assume responsibility for damage to, nor loss of personal property brought to YPI by students. YPI reserves the right to use photographs and student work for advertising purposes. If you do not wish YPI to use photos or student work, please request in writing that your sons/daughters photographs, writing or artwork may not be used.
